Varanasi History

Varanasi is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world and the oldest inhabited city in India. It is a famous city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is also known as ‘Banaras’ and ‘Kashi’. It is considered one of the most sacred cities in Hinduism and is called Avimukt Kshetra. Apart from this, it is also considered sacred in Buddhism and Jainism. The culture of Varanasi has an unbreakable relationship with the Ganges River, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple and its religious significance. This city has been the cultural and religious center of India, especially North India, for thousands of years. Varanasi is often addressed with adjectives like ‘City of Temples’, ‘Religious Capital of India’, ‘City of Lord Shiva’, ‘City of Lights’, ‘Knowledge City’ etc. The famous American writer Mark Twain writes: “Banaras is older than history, older than traditions, older than legends and when all these are put together, it is twice as old as that collection.” The Banaras gharana of Hindustani classical music originated and evolved in Varanasi. Many philosophers, poets, writers, musicians of India have lived in Varanasi, including Kabir, Vallabhacharya, Ravidas, Swami Ramanand, Trailanga Swami, Shivanand Goswami, Munshi Premchand, Jaishankar Prasad, Acharya Ramchandra Shukla, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Girija Devi, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Ustad Bismillah Khan to name a few. Goswami Tulsidas wrote the most revered Hindu text Ramcharitmanas here and Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath nearby. The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage place for Hindus for centuries. Hindus believe that one who is blessed to die on the land of Varanasi will attain salvation and liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. The abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origin of Varanasi is still unknown. The Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away the sins of mortals. The name of this city Varanasi is formed by the combination of two local rivers Varuna River and Asi River. These two rivers come from north and south respectively and meet the Ganges River. Apart from this, it is also said about the name of this city that in ancient times Varuna River must have been called Varanasi, due to which this city was called Varanasi. Apart from this, this city is also known by the names Banaras, Kashi, City of Light, Bholenath’s city etc.

Lord Shiva founded Kashi city

Talking about the origin of Varanasi, according to religious beliefs and mythology, Lord Shiva established this Kashi city about 5000 years ago. Not only this, Lord Shiva himself is seated here in the form of Kashi Vishwanath, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This is the reason why even today Banaras is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus. This city is mentioned in many Hindu scriptures including Skanda Purana, Ramayana, Mahabharata, the oldest Veda Rigveda. Banaras is also famous for this Apart from religious importance, this city is also very special for other reasons. From the Banarasi sarees found here to the delicious Banarasi paan, people from far and wide like them.
